This merchant’s house in Cádiz was built around 1770. It stands out for its watchtower with a sentry box—one of the tallest in Cádiz—and its Castilian appearance.
In 1812, this house was the residence of Don Pedro de Sousa y Holstein, Count of Palmela, a Portuguese aristocrat, grandson of the King of Denmark, born in Turin in 1781 and educated in Geneva and Coimbra. At the time, the Count was serving as the Portuguese Ambassador to the General and Extraordinary Spanish Courts, while they were in exile in the city of Cádiz, which was under siege by Napoleon’s troops occupying most of the Iberian Peninsula since 1810.
